My personal suggestion however would be to have a blacklist for fonts, that by default contains all Noto fonts except for ones that match system locales. The entry of Noto font could be replaced. Some software lets users pick their favorite fonts and allow for filtering by favorites in the font selection. When Google Noto fonts1 were installed and listed by fontconfig library on Linux, CompositeFont couldnt contain it. Inkscape displays a reasonable selection of fonts, that people would actually want to choose from.The legacy text system ends up using 'some' system font available on the given platform. For CJK, I use the Noto CJK font which has good glyph coverage. There are many different versions of the font that can be chosen based on needs. So, what I said above (about excluding noto-fonts) is wrong, because I forgot that -s searches by regex (rather than some other, simpler kind of pattern matching). The Noto font family from Google does support every single language. It is derived from Droid, and like Droid it has a sister serif family, Noto Sans. It has Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold Italic styles and is hinted. This is the Serif Latin, Greek and Cyrillic family. However, it makes using font selectors in most applications frustrating, because there is just so many Noto Fonts, that only differ by what characters from different languages they include. Currently, Noto covers over 30 scripts, and will cover all of Unicode in the future. The Noto Font Family is installed on many operating systems and is actually a great and useful thing.
